  • Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon
  • Orthopedics

Max Hoshino is a board-certified and fellowship trained orthopaedic trauma surgeon. He treats a broad spectrum of traumatic musculoskeletal injuries including both simple and complex extremity fractures, pelvic and acetabular fractures, nonunions, malunions, and post-traumatic/surgical infections. Dr. Hoshino has expertise in traumatic soft tissue injuries and limb reconstruction including the treatment of bone defects. Finally, Dr. Hoshino performs arthroplasty (joint replacement) for the treatment of acute fractures and post-traumatic arthritis of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip.

Dr. Hoshino earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California at Irvine with honors and then spent the next three years traveling the world as a professional surfer. He subsequently went on to attend medical school at the University of California at San Diego where he earned the George Glenner award for graduating as the number one student in his class.

During his orthopaedic surgery residency at Harbor-UCLA, a busy level-1 trauma center, he experienced deep satisfaction from helping people and from the ability to provide patients with immediate life-changing results. This compelled Dr. Hoshino to focus on orthopaedic trauma and complete a fellowship at the world famous University of Maryland, Shock Trauma Center. There he grew his passion for the creativity necessary to achieve excellent results in even the most complex injuries.

Dr. Hoshino is currently heavily involved in the teaching and training of new orthopedic surgeons. He is a off-site director for UC Irvine orthopedic residents and a clinical professor at UCI. He is assistant chief of orthopedic trauma at Harbor-UCLA and actively involved in teaching residents. Additionally Dr. Hoshino travels extensively to teach surgeons and resident surgeons in both industry sponsored and independent courses. Dr. Hoshino is involved in teaching for Globus, OrthoFix, Smith and Nephew, and Stryker. Dr. Hoshino is involved in orthopedic trauma research and has authored multiple textbook chapters, published numerous original articles, and wrote his own book on the initial care of the injured patient (LWW). His research has been published in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Orthopedic Trauma, Injury, and Orthopedics. He has also been involved in the testing and design of orthopedic trauma implants for NuVasive, Stryker, Conventus and Globus.
